Friedrich zu Limburg-Stirum was the son of Frederik Adrian zu Limburg-Stirum (1804–1874) and his second wife, Johanna Franziska Viktorine Ebers (1808–1878).
He initially served as envoy to Weimar and the Thuringian courts and as Deputy State Secretary at the Foreign Office; in September 1880, he became the acting State Secretary of the Foreign Office, succeeding Chlodwig zu Hohenlohe-Schillingsfürst. He held this position until he was replaced by Clemens Busch on June 25, 1881. In February 1892, he became the center of a controversy. At the behest of the then-Chancellor Leo von Caprivi, he was dismissed from the civil service and forfeited all pension rights; this action was taken because, in December 1891, he had published a critical article regarding the Austrian trade treaty in which he disputed its political necessity and accused the state of unfairly treating the German Conservative Party (DKP) despite its past loyalty.
From 1870 to 1905, he served as a conservative deputy in the Prussian House of Representatives, representing the Breslau 5 constituency (Breslau, Neumarkt). From 1898 to 1907, he was a member of the Reichstag representing the DKP.
In 1904, he was awarded an honorary doctorate in law (LL.D.) by the University of Wisconsin–Madison.
He became a member—and later an honorary member—of the *Corps Borussia Bonn* in 1854.
