German M18 steel helmet featuring the wearer's name, a "Nobel" chin strap, and unit markings for Pioneer Battalion 20 (Hamburg-Harburg); double-decal configuration.
A fine M18 helmet, originally a double-decal model. The decals have been removed, though traces remain clearly visible. The steel helmet is inscribed on the back of the neck skirt with the wearer's name—Lieutenant Parchon—and his unit: 3. mot. Pi 20.
This abbreviation stands for the 3rd Company (motorized) of Pioneer Battalion 20.
Pioneer Battalion 20 (home station: Hamburg-Harburg) saw action in almost all European theaters of war:
1939 (Polish Campaign): Advance across the Corridor towards Brest-Litovsk.
1940 (Western Campaign): Advance through the Netherlands and Belgium; participation in the Battle of Dunkirk followed by an advance to the Swiss border.
1941–1943 (Eastern Front – Northern Sector): Offensive as part of Panzer Group 3, advancing via Minsk and Smolensk to the outskirts of Moscow (Vyazma/Klin area). This was followed by heavy defensive fighting in the Shlisselburg and Volkhov sectors (Siege of Leningrad).
1943–1944 (Eastern Front – Central and Southern Sectors): Following the division's redesignation as the 20th Panzergrenadier Division, the unit engaged in fighting retreats via Kamenets-Podolsky (Hube Pocket), Brody, and Western Ukraine, eventually reaching Poland (Tarnów/Baranów bridgehead).
March/April 1945: The battalion was swept up in the Soviet major offensive against Berlin. It was almost completely destroyed in the Halbe Pocket (south of Berlin) in April 1945.
The chin strap was replaced during the period with a privately purchased "deluxe" strap. A fine, matching, and original helmet.
