Original Pustefix Bubble-Blowing Teddy Bear – electric teddy from the 1970s/80s
An extraordinary piece of Pustefix, teddy bear, and toy history
Are you looking for a special teddy bear, a rare vintage teddy, or an exceptional collector's item from the 1970s or 1980s? Then this original Pustefix bubble-blowing teddy bear represents a truly unique opportunity.
For sale is an original, electrically operated Pustefix teddy bear, seated on a child-sized chair. The bear is in excellent collector's condition (graded 1-), has been inspected, and is fully functional.
This Pustefix bear is far more than just an ordinary old teddy bear. It bridges the worlds of teddy bears and vintage toys with the history of Pustefix advertising and early shop-window displays.
Pustefix Bubble-Blowing Teddy Bear – almost like a small arcade machine
What makes this teddy bear so extraordinary is its electric function.
As soon as the bear is plugged into a power outlet, the performance begins: the right arm slowly lowers, dipping the attached bubble wand into the included, refillable Pustefix bubble solution. The bear then raises its arm again and gently blows bubbles into the air through a small tube in its mouth.
For children back then, this performance must have been a fascinating attraction.
From today's perspective, the Pustefix bubble-blowing teddy bear can certainly be described as a kind of early mechanical-electric entertainment device for children—comparable to a small arcade machine, but without a prize-winning function. The real "prize" was the experience itself: a large teddy bear that moved on its own while creating bubbles. A historic crowd-puller for toy stores
That was precisely the intended purpose of these special bears.
In the early days of toy retail, Pustefix soap-bubble-blowing bears were used to draw in customers and serve as promotional attractions. They were placed in shop windows, outside the store, or in the entrance area, designed to capture children's attention.
A large teddy bear that moved and then blew soap bubbles was an extraordinary eye-catcher for children. Kids would stop, watch the bear’s performance, and become curious about the toy store.
The bear was not meant to be merely decorative; it had a clear function as a customer magnet and promotional tool: to draw the attention of children—and by extension, their parents—to the store and encourage them to come inside.
This makes the Pustefix teddy an exceptional example of a form of interactive window display advertising that has long since vanished.
A rare Pustefix teddy bear
According to available information, only about 300 of these special Pustefix bears were produced worldwide during the 1970s and 1980s. Production was handled partly by Pustefix itself and partly by selected suppliers.
The bears were not intended for sale as ordinary toys. Instead, they were loaned to selected toy retailers who purchased specific quantities of Pustefix products.
At these locations, they served as promotional figures, window display attractions, and crowd-pullers. Through their animated performance and the production of soap bubbles, they aimed to make the Pustefix brand a tangible experience for children and make the toy store itself more appealing.
The elaborate rental program for these promotional bears was eventually discontinued, which is why only a few original examples survive today. Pieces that have remained so well-preserved over the decades and still include their original accessories are exceptionally rare.
