Family chest with Tree of Life and runes in the Antiques category
The front depicts a man and woman standing at the Tree of Life. The symbol of the man and woman holding the Irminsul is from the Germanic community and was a key identifying mark of this community.
The front features Germanic runes and handles on both sides, which appear to have been modified at some point for carrying the chest. The chest is otherwise in good condition. The interior bottom appears to be varnished. The family name is inscribed on the top of the lid.
The chest bears the inscription "To Our Clan!" and uses runic symbolism.
All the symbols are carved. The chest is old, and the carvings were likely made after 1945. During this period, the "clan" was highly idealized as the core of the community, and such pieces of furniture were intended to anchor family traditions and a "Germanic" identity in everyday life.
