Early peaked cap for infantry officers, so-called "crumpled cap," circa 1940
The cap is made of fine officer-quality cloth with an elegant, soft shape, complete with a Bevo metallic thread woven eagle and oak leaf wreath.
The visor is made of soft patent leather in the branch color white.
Hand-stitched cap! The interior features a light brown sweatband and silk lining. Unfortunately, the manufacturer's mark is no longer legible. Worn, with a tear in the sweatband. The exterior is in excellent condition. Extremely rare to find on the market in this crumpled version!
Regarding the manufacturer:
As far as we could decipher, the abbreviation "Gr. Platz 29" appears on the cap lining. This abbreviation refers to Gendarmenmarkt 29 in Berlin.
The renowned cap maker Hermann Potthoff was located at this address (and in the immediate vicinity of Gendarmenmarkt, which was historically also known as "Großer Platz" or "Groschkenmarkt").
Potthoff was a well-known supplier of high-quality officers' headgear. Since knucklecaps were considered "personal property" acquired privately by officers, they often bear the stamps of Berlin tailors, known for their elegant saddle shape and soft workmanship. However, as mentioned, this manufacturer's mark is not guaranteed.
Celluloid trapezoid, cracked. The diamond-shaped cover in the center protects the lining from sweat and hair oil.
