Offered for sale is a rare and largely complete original German Wehrmacht Balloon Theodolite dating from 1941. This highly specialized optical measuring instrument represents an important piece of WWII military meteorological and artillery history.

Historical Background

The Balloon Theodolite (Ballontheodolit) was specifically designed for aerological observations. By tracking the flight path of a released weather balloon, Wehrmacht personnel could determine wind direction, wind speed, and upper-air conditions. Measurements were taken at regular intervals by reading the azimuth and elevation angles, allowing precise calculation of balloon drift. Such data was crucial for artillery fire control, aviation, and military weather services.
