Auschwitz Concentration Camp Memorial Cross from World War II
Original Polish Auschwitz Memorial Cross. It is a 43 mm wide, silver-plated cross with a side openwork ring for ribbon suspension. The obverse is decorated with fence posts and barbed wire, on which an inverted red triangle with the letter "P" is printed, as worn by Polish camp inmates.
The reverse bears the inscription "RP" (Polish Republic) and "WIĘŹNIOM HITLEROWSKICH OBOZÓW KONCENTRACYJNYCH" (For the prisoners of Hitler's concentration camps). The original ribbon is representative of the prisoners' clothing.
The cross was established on March 14, 1985, by decree of the Council of State (Rada Państwa) and awarded to former prisoners of Auschwitz and other Nazi concentration camps. The award was discontinued in 1999.
